We can probably all agree that original, interesting, useful copy and content that makes the reader want to do something is what most businesses want. And if search engines love it as well, so much the better.

I’ve worked in-house in marketing teams for years and to me, producing great content at scale sometimes seemed as difficult as finding the Holy Grail. Yes, we had a content strategy. Yes, we had an implementation plan, timelines and KPIs. Hell, we sometimes even wrote the first few pieces of content we’d planned to. But for all the good intentions and plans, we often didn't have anyone dedicated to the actual writing – we just agreed to share it around the team. We were all marketers, we could dash off some great content in a couple of hours, right? Wrong. No matter how much we dreamed about it, Indiana Jones never appeared with his whip and signature hat to help us find that Holy Grail. Sadly.

The copy we wanted to write vs the copy we actually wrote

That was our main problem – who in the team could dedicate the hours needed to produce expertly written content which would make our customers want to pick up the phone, wave their credit card in our direction or sign up to our mailing list? We knew that great content could help us build relationships with our customers, get a bit of an edge over our competitors and get our sales message out there with snap and pizazz. We needed some extra, and expert, support.

That is how I found out that hiring a freelance copywriter brings not only sparkling, original and interesting content (that’s always grammatically correct), but also more traffic, leads, and sales. It was a no-brainer.

Why hiring a freelance copywriter works

Freelance

1. Get fresh, original content regularly

This is what your customers (and prospective customers) want, and Google loves it too. You’ll also get projects completed more quickly by adding an extra person to your team – and you’ll do it without adding to your headcount. Microsoft office unlicensed product message examples.

2. Copywriters give you more flexibility

Using a freelance copywriter brings flexibility – you can scale projects up or down in the knowledge that your copywriter will provide whatever you need, whenever you need it. If you only need support for one day per month, that’s fine. A big project has just been signed off and you need someone for two weeks straight? No problem.

3. Your team can concentrate on what they’re good at

You won’t need to take anyone in your team away from their day-to-day work, so you’ll save time while hiring someone whose sole commitment to you is to provide great copy that works. You’re also safe in the knowledge that you’ve got an expert on the case – after all, you wouldn’t ask an events manager to code a website or a web developer to dip into PR.

4. Boost your search engine rankings

A good copywriter won’t just write copy for your website, you’ll get some search engine love in the form of on-page SEO as well (and they should be up-to-date on the latest Google changes). Well-written, useful, non-duplicated copy will drive more relevant organic traffic to your site and, in turn, increase sales.

5. Get an edge over your competitors

You’ll gain a competitive advantage with original content that makes you stand apart, differentiating you from your competitors.

6. Professional copywriters deliver results

If your copywriter knows your objectives, targets and goals, they’ll provide copy which delivers results against these metrics, whether that’s boosting traffic, converting prospects into customers, increasing sign up rates or downloading an e-book.

7. Freelancers will give you a different perspective

A pair of fresh eyes will see things differently and offer different viewpoints. It’s easy for someone in-house to get bogged down in details that your customers may not even care about (and a freelance copywriter is way less likely to use your company jargon. I could write a whole post about that. And I might).

8. Get copy your customers will love

A good copywriter will get to know your customers and write with them in mind rather than with your company in mind – this one is crucial, if your content doesn’t mean anything to your customers, why are you writing it in the first place?

9. New ideas for your business

A freelance copywriter will generally have worked across a range of industries as well as different types of companies, so they’ll see things being done differently and will be able to give you new ideas, angles, and objective opinions. And they’re independent, as opposed to being bought into your product or service.

10. Copywriters write for a living

This one sounds obvious…but freelance copywriters write all the time. They’re good at it, and they practise their already finely honed skills. They consistently produce quality content and know all the tricks that make people want to read and share it.

And a bonus point, because I’m on a roll…

11. You can find a specialist copywriter to suit your needs

You can match the copywriter to your project – you’ll be able to find copywriters with technical specialisms, ones who are particularly creative, and ones who specialise in certain types of content, from research papers to social media

I’m now a freelance copywriter, so of course I believe in all of these benefits – but there are benefits to having an in-house copywriter as well, especially if you write a lot of internal communications. Freelance copywriters can in fact boost and support your in-house copywriters, it doesn’t have to be one or the other (if your budget can stretch that far, of course).
